Our first report takes us to Morocco where a non-profit organisation aims to bring American and Moroccan students together. The Crossing Borders Education programme, set up in 2003, aims to tackle religious and cultural prejudice. The idea is to encourage young people to discuss their differences, and try to crosscheck preconceived ideas. In the past eight years, Crossing Borders has set up 250 intercultural exchanges with Morocco and thousands of young people have taken part.
Music is a universal language. Singing, playing, listening, appreciating – all of it enriches young people, boosts their learning skills and deepens their understanding of history and culture. In Japan some children learn to play using the Suzuki Method. Teachers there say it can help even the tone-deaf to strike the right note. The question of who should pay for university education in Europe is a growing concern and a controversial issue. With the global economic crisis, increase in demand and lack of finance, questions are being asked about public funding and some governments are implementing financial reforms, putting some of the burden on the students themselves. Students making up their own rules may sound like a recipe for mayhem, but the staff at the Summerhill School in the south of England say it has a positive impact.
